Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning is a first-person survival horror game by Micah McGonigal, who published it under the name Basically Games in 2018 after building it in two weeks for an itch.io jam. It looks like a failed 1990s educational cartridge, flat green corridors, clip-art characters, a jingle about learning, and a bald man with a ruler. That man is Baldi, and he starts the game as your favourite math teacher. The joke is the entire design: every wrong answer, every broken rule and every noise you make turns the nicest man in the building into the thing that hunts you down.
This guide covers Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered, the 2022 rebuild that runs on the Baldi's Basics Plus engine and contains three separate styles of the same schoolhouse map. Classic Style is the original 2018 game, Party Style is Birthday Bash with every item reshuffled into gift boxes, and Demo Style mixes in Plus features such as math machines and random events. The core rules are identical across all three: find seven notebooks, answer the maths problems on the You Can Think Pad, and reach an exit before Baldi reaches you. What changes between styles is where items spawn, which characters appear, and how aggressive they are.
How to Play Baldi's Basics
There is no health bar, no fighting and no stamina-based combat. Your entire toolkit is move, look, run, interact and use the three items in your inventory. Every death is a routing mistake rather than a fight you lost, because nothing in the school can hurt you except the four characters who want you somewhere else. Keep the mouse inside the frame so pointer lock stays live, walk rather than sprint whenever Baldi can hear you, and remember that running is the fastest way to publish your position to the whole faculty.
Game Controls
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| W A S D or Arrow keys | Walk. This is your quiet default pace and it makes far less noise than running. |
| Mouse | Look around. Click once to capture the pointer and it stays locked for the rest of the run. |
| Left click or E | Interact. Opens doors, picks up notebooks and items, flips wall switches, and answers the math pad. |
| Right click or Q | Use the currently selected item. Firing the BSODA, eating a Zesty Bar or winding the alarm clock all happen here. |
| Shift | Run. Fast and stamina-hungry, and the noise it makes is the single loudest thing you can do near Baldi. |
| Space | Look behind you without turning the camera all the way around, which saves a lot of blind-corner deaths. |
| Scroll wheel or 1, 2, 3 | Cycle through your three inventory slots and choose which item the use key fires. |
| Esc | Open the pause menu, which also holds the settings for audio, subtitles and control rebinding. |
How to Beat Baldi's Basics
Treat the first two notebooks as the only free math you will ever get
In Classic Style the first notebook's problems are real addition and subtraction, and the second notebook still has two solvable questions. From the third notebook onward the third question on the pad is deliberately unreadable, which means a guaranteed miss. Do not waste attempts trying to solve it. Answer the two readable questions correctly, take the free quarter, and accept that Baldi has now started hunting you for the rest of the run. Every strategy below assumes you are being chased from that point onward, because you are.
Buy the Zesty Bar before notebook seven, not during the escape
Vending machines take quarters and most of them are single use per run, so the machine you ignore in the first half of the school is the machine you will want in the second. Collect two or three quarters from desks and handouts along the way, spend them on Zesty Bars, and hold them. The escape phase is a straight sprint with a stamina bar, Baldi at full speed, and no room to hesitate. Entering the finale with a full bar and one Zesty Bar in slot one is the difference between reaching an exit and getting caught halfway down a corridor.
Plan the last two notebooks as one continuous route, not two errands
The school map never changes, so the fastest approach is to decide the order of the last classrooms before you enter them and walk a loop that never crosses the same corridor twice. The Principal punishes you for running in the halls, and Playtime pins you in place for five jumps, so both of those interruptions are far more expensive when they happen between two notebooks than after the seventh. Collect the Safety Scissors before you meet Playtime even once, and remember that after the seventh notebook Arts and Crafters will teleport you next to Baldi if you look at it, so do not turn around in the exit corridor.
Use noise deliberately during the escape, then stop making noise entirely
Once all seven notebooks are collected the school turns red, three of the four exits lock as you reach them, and Baldi moves at his maximum speed. Drop an alarm clock in the wing furthest from your chosen exit and run the opposite direction while the sound pulls him away. Do not open doors you do not have to open, do not sprint past a yellow swinging door without WD-NoSquee on it, and remember the Principal is still patrolling and still faster than you in Hard Mode. The loudest safe escape is the one where Baldi walks the entire length of the building while you walk the other direction.
Important Items in Baldi's Basics
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| BSODA | A blue soda can that fires a jet of foam and physically pushes Baldi, the Principal and It's a Bully back down the corridor until it hits a wall. The single most valuable item in the game. |
| Energy Flavored Zesty Bar | Refills the stamina bar instantly and lets it run past its normal maximum for a while. Buy it before the seventh notebook, not after. |
| Quarter | The school currency. Spends on the BSODA and Zesty Bar vending machines, and it is the only way to get It's a Bully to step aside without losing an item. |
| Principal's Keys | Opens the faculty room door and lets you cut your own detention short by unlocking the office from the inside instead of waiting out the timer. |
| Safety Scissors | Cuts Playtime's jump rope, ending the skipping minigame. Without them you are stuck jumping while Baldi closes in, which is usually fatal. |
| Alarm Clock | Place it on the floor and it rings after a short delay, pulling Baldi to that spot. The best single distraction in the game during the escape phase. |
| WD-NoSquee | A spray can that silences a yellow swinging door for four uses, so opening it no longer tells Baldi exactly which room you are in. |
| Baldi Anti Hearing and Deafening Tape | Played on the tape deck in the Principal's office. It emits a high frequency noise that stops Baldi hearing you for a limited stretch, letting you cross a wing unnoticed. |
Baldi's Basics Difficulty Modes
| Mode | Best for |
|---|---|
| Classic Style | Your first run. The original 2018 schoolhouse with fixed item spawns and the full original roster of Baldi, the Principal, Playtime, It's a Bully, Gotta Sweep, Arts and Crafters and 1st Prize. |
| Party Style | Replay value. Every item is wrapped in a gift box and shuffled, balloons drift through the halls, and the vending machines can be used more than once. |
| Demo Style | A harder remix. Items spawn in new places, math machines replace some notebooks, random events fire, and Beans and Cloudy Copter join the cast. |
| Endless | Score chasing. Available in all three styles, it drops the seven-notebook limit and asks how many you can collect before Baldi catches you. |
| Hard Mode | Endgame only. Unlocked by clearing Demo Style, it makes every math question after the second notebook solvable, speeds up NPC timers, gives Playtime ten jumps, and adds 15-second chunks to detention. |
Tips and Strategies for Baldi's Basics
Sprint while you are out of earshot, walk the rest of the time
Baldi navigates by sound and running is the loudest thing you can do. The fix is not to avoid running, it is to run in the wrong order. Move at a walk whenever there is a closed door or a corner between you and him, then sprint the length of the room you can see is empty. You also keep more stamina for the escape phase, which is where running is mandatory rather than optional.
Three inventory slots means carrying the wrong thing costs you a run
You can hold three items and duplicates do not stack, so a second BSODA is wasted space. Carry one of each category rather than three of one: a defensive item, a stamina item, and a tool. Restock from the vending machines before the escape rather than during it, because standing at a machine while Baldi is walking toward you is the worst trade in the game.
Solve the Principal's detention by unlocking it from the inside
Running in the halls or entering the faculty room sends you to detention, and every second there is a second Baldi gains. If you have the Principal's Keys, unlock the office door and leave immediately rather than serving the full timer. If you do not have them, remember that detention does not end the run, only pauses it, and the Principal cannot follow you while you are standing in a classroom solving math.
Learn the map on Classic Style before touching Demo or Hard
Classic Style has fixed spawns, so the notebook locations you memorise on run one are still correct on run ten. Demo Style moves items to new rooms and adds random events, and Hard Mode changes NPC timers and the math rules, so the map knowledge does not transfer cleanly. Clear Classic Style first, then treat Demo Style as the real learning curve, and only turn Hard Mode on once you can reach the last notebook without losing a run to Playtime.
Baldi's Basics FAQ
How many notebooks do I need to escape Baldi's Basics?
Seven. They are hidden in classrooms across the schoolhouse and each one you pick up triggers a three-question You Can Think Pad. Once all seven are collected the school lighting turns red, the four exits unlock, three of them close on you as you arrive, and the fourth takes you out of the building.
What happens when I get a math question wrong?
Baldi stops being friendly. He gets angry, his ruler-slapping gets faster, and he begins hunting you by sound for the rest of the run. There is no way to reduce his anger, so the only real answer is that a wrong answer permanently raises the difficulty of that attempt. The trick is that in Classic Style most of the third questions are unreadable, so a miss is often unavoidable and not your fault.
How does the stamina system work?
The bar at the bottom of the screen drains continuously while you sprint and refills when you walk. Sprinting is faster but it is also the loudest action in the game, so every second of stamina you burn is a second of noise given away. When the bar empties you are forced to move at walking speed until it recovers, which during a chase is usually the moment Baldi catches up.
What does each of the other characters do to me?
The Principal of the Thing sends you to detention for running in the halls or entering the faculty room. Playtime stops you for a five-jump skipping rope session and you cannot move while it runs. It's a Bully blocks a corridor and demands an item, or a quarter, to move. Gotta Sweep, a talking broom, barges into you in the hallways and knocks you over, and Arts and Crafters will teleport you next to Baldi if you look at it after the seventh notebook.
What is the BSODA and why is it the best item?
The BSODA is a soda can that fires a continuous jet of blue foam, and anything it touches gets physically shoved backward until it hits a wall. It works on Baldi, on the Principal and on It's a Bully, which makes it the only item that solves a problem instead of just delaying it. Fire it in a straight corridor for maximum distance and you have bought yourself several seconds of free movement.
Can I beat Baldi's Basics without using any items?
It is possible to reach an exit relying only on movement, path knowledge and the alarm clock distraction, but it is not reliable. The stamina bar drains during the escape sprint and there is no way to refill it without a Zesty Bar, so a clean run usually means one wasted mistake too many. Items are the difference between a one in twenty attempt and a one in five attempt.
What is the hardest part of the game?
The escape after the seventh notebook. Baldi is at maximum speed, three exits are locked, the stamina bar is already partly spent, and the Principal is still patrolling. Playtime and the exits are survivable. It is the flat sprint with a draining bar and an empty inventory that ends most runs, which is why the Zesty Bar and the alarm clock matter more than anything else you find.
What is the difference between Classic Style, Party Style and Demo Style?
All three run on the same schoolhouse map and all three ask you to collect seven notebooks. Classic Style is the original 2018 game with fixed item spawns. Party Style wraps every item in a gift box and shuffles where it appears, adds balloons, and lets the vending machines be used repeatedly. Demo Style relocates items, replaces some notebooks with math machines, adds random events, and introduces Beans and Cloudy Copter as extra hazards.
