fnaf-world is a role-playing spin-off of Five Nights at Freddy's by Scott Cawthon, released on 21 January 2016 and later re-released free after an unfinished launch. It takes the animatronics from the horror series and redraws them as small, round, cheerful-looking characters, then puts them in a turn-based RPG. You control two parties of four, walk around an overworld map, and get into random battles with enemies that belong to specific areas. The tone is comedic and the presentation is deliberately low-fi, but the structure underneath it is a full RPG loop with experience levels, a currency, shops and a long list of secret areas.
What makes it worth playing is the world. The map is split into named regions you unlock as you progress, starting at Fazbear Hills and running through Choppy's Woods, Dusting Fields, Lilygear Lake, Blacktomb Yard, Pinwheel Circus and Pinwheel Funhouse, with the Mysterious Mine and the Deep-Metal Mine branching off them. There is also a hidden dimension called the Flipside, entered through glitch portals that lead to Sub-Tunnels, and a glitched world called the Glitches that holds the hardest enemies and the best chips. Seven or more endings exist depending on difficulty, on which party leader you pick, and on how deep into the code you go.
How to Play FNAF World
There is no stealth and no survival. Nothing in the overworld can hurt you except a battle, and a battle is resolved on its own screen. The combat is pseudo turn-based: you pick one command for each of your four characters, the enemy can act between your turns, and every character has exactly three commands drawn from a fixed set of colour-coded categories. Orange is single-target damage, red is area damage, pink heals, white buffs, green poisons, purple debuffs and black is an instant kill. A knocked-out character is revived between fights, so a loss costs you a moment rather than progress.
Game Controls
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| Arrow keys or WASD | Walk around the overworld. Random encounters trigger while you move, so the pace of the map is the pace of the combat. |
| Enter or Z | Confirm a selection, talk to an NPC such as Fredbear, open a chest or enter a warp point once you have reached it. |
| Tab | Show the full overworld map with your current position marked on it, which is how you keep track of which regions you have and have not opened. |
| 1 through 6 or the number keys on the right | Select which of your active party members you are issuing a command to during a battle. |
| Left and Right arrows in battle | Cycle the three commands available to the selected character. Every character has three, and what they are depends entirely on who you recruited. |
| R | Attempt to flee from a battle in progress. It does not always work, and losing the attempt costs you the turn. |
| F2 | Return to the title screen from anywhere in the game. Saving is separate, and the game also autosaves, so use the in-game save prompt when it appears. |
| Esc | Close the game window. |
How to Beat FNAF World
Recruit in Adventure mode, then build one balanced party and stop remixing it
The colour categories are the whole combat system, and a party of four identical damage dealers will lose to a boss that a mixed party beats. Aim for at least one pink healer, one red area attacker, one white buffer and one orange single-target hitter, then stop fiddling. Swapping characters constantly costs you a turn in the middle of a fight, which is usually the turn that kills you, so decide the lineup before a region and leave it alone inside it.
Open regions in order and buy the token upgrades before the fancy ones
The map is gated so that Fazbear Hills leads into Choppy's Woods, then Dusting Fields, then Lilygear Lake, and the regions branch from there. Progressing in that order keeps you matched against enemies your level can handle. Within each region, buy armour and cheap bytes first and hold the 9000-token titanium endoskeleton until the late areas, since a huge defence bill spent early means no healing when a boss starts hitting back.
Farm the early regions for experience rather than rushing the map
Enemies give experience and tokens, and the first two regions have enemies weak enough to grind for levels. Running straight to a later boss underlevelled is the most common way to lose, because enemy health scales sharply and a level difference in this game decides the fight before your commands do. Grounding a character to the level you need in Dusting Fields is faster than attempting Pinwheel Circus at the level you arrived with.
Play Hard mode only after you know the ending you are going for
Normal mode ends after you defeat the owl-shaped guardian guarding the source, and the game then mocks you for taking the easy difficulty. Hard mode instead puts Scott Cawthon himself in the red tent as the final boss, and beating him is what unlocks the true final ending. Because the choice is locked at the start, finish the Normal route to see the short ending first, then start a Hard run deliberately rather than stumbling into it on a first playthrough.
Important Items in FNAF World
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Faz Tokens | The in-game currency, earned from battles, found in chests and won at DeeDee's Fishing Hole. Spent on every upgrade in every shop, so how you spend it decides how fast the party grows. |
| Chips | Passive upgrades bought with Faz Tokens. They are permanent stat boosts and the strongest of them are hidden inside the glitched areas rather than sold in the ordinary shops. |
| Bytes | Small helpers that appear in battle and assist your party. Different byte types deal extra damage, block attacks or restore health for the party, and they are sold by the byte vendors. |
| Enendoskeleton upgrades from Mendo | Armour upgrades for your party, priced from 250 tokens for a reinforced endoskeleton up to 9000 for a titanium one. Purely defensive, which makes them the most expensive way to make a late fight survivable. |
| DeeDee's fishing loot | Pay 10 tokens to fish, and the depth of the catch sets the payout, from a one-token orange fish up to a 100-token pearl at the bottom. The cheapest reliable income early on if you are broke after a shop. |
| Bombs, reapers and medpods from the bite shops | One-time battle consumables sold in the region shops. Bombs explode once for heavy damage, reapers have a chance of an instant kill, and medpods restore teammate health mid-fight. |
| Clocks | A hidden optional collectible scattered across the overworld. Collecting all of them unlocks a dedicated ending, and Fredbear will nudge you toward them if you leave him idle long enough in conversation. |
| Keys and locked chests | Several regions gate progress behind a key that a boss or a chest in a later area provides, most notably the master key in the Withering Dunes that opens every lock in the game. |
FNAF World Difficulty Modes
| Mode | Best for |
|---|---|
| Adventure mode | Your first run. You start with a limited set of characters and recruit stronger ones as you explore, which makes the early regions forgiving and gives you real options later. |
| Fixed Party mode | A harder challenge run. You choose both full parties up front and never swap in recruits, so your initial four-character choice has to carry the whole game. |
| Normal difficulty | Learning the systems. Enemies have standard health and damage, and you will find the game much easier while you are working out which colour categories your party is missing. |
| Hard mode | Endgame only. Enemy health and damage roughly double, which removes most early encounters being winnable at level one, and it is the only mode that reaches the true final ending. |
| Sub-Tunnels and the Glitches | Post-game hunting. Glitch portals hidden in each region lead to secret areas with the hardest enemies, the best chips, and the lore that explains what the Flipside actually is. |
Tips and Strategies for FNAF World
Carry one healer no matter how good your damage is
Black instant-kill commands and heavy red attacks look decisive, but they do nothing for a party that is already down. A single pink healer is what turns a lost fight into a won one, because characters are restored to full health after every fight and the cost of a fight is only the walk back. Losing is cheap in this game and items are not, so the safe play is to heal and win slowly rather than race and lose repeatedly.
Use Tab constantly, because the region list is the real progression
The map screen marks where you are across every unlocked region, and the game expects you to use it. Most confusion in fnaf-world comes from walking a region four times looking for an exit that is actually in the next one. Check the map after every new region opens, note the warp points you unlock, and then use the warp squares rather than walking back across the overworld for no reason.
Do not skip the Sub-Tunnels, they hold the best chips in the game
Glitch portals are hidden in plain sight inside each region, marked by small visual errors, and entering one drops you into a Sub-Tunnel with an enemy set far above the area you came from. The reward is a chip that no shop sells, and chips are the only permanent upgrade source. If you are stuck on a boss, the usual answer is that you have not found the portal in the region you are standing in.
Farm DeeDee's fishing hole when you are broke, it is free money
Paying 10 tokens at DeeDee's spot opens a quick fishing minigame where the payout scales with how deep the fish is, up to a 100-token pearl at the bottom. It costs almost nothing and it is faster than grinding a low-tier enemy, which makes it the correct way to fund a shop visit when you have just spent everything on the last one. Greed for the pearl is the trap, since most of the time you will land a cheap fish.
FNAF World FAQ
What are the different game modes in fnaf-world?
There are two party modes and two difficulty levels, giving four combinations. Adventure mode starts you with a limited roster and lets you recruit replacements as you explore, while Fixed Party mode locks both four-character teams in at the start and you can never swap a recruit in. Normal and Hard are the difficulty levels, with Hard roughly doubling enemy health and damage. On top of that, the hidden Sub-Tunnels are a separate optional layer rather than a mode you select.
What do the attack colours in combat mean?
Every command belongs to a category. Orange is basic single-target damage, red is area-of-effect damage, pink heals the party, white provides party buffs, green inflicts poison, purple applies debuffs that weaken the enemy, and black is an instant kill. Each character has exactly three commands, and which three you get is fixed by who that character is, so party composition is decided entirely by who you choose to bring.
How do experience and levels work in fnaf-world?
Winning a battle grants experience points to every character who was not knocked out, and enough experience raises their level, which unlocks stronger commands and higher stats. Knocked-out characters come back at full health after the fight but gain nothing from it, so spreading your losses across the party is better than sacrificing one member every time. Levels are the real gate on progression, which is why grinding the early regions is faster than pushing ahead.
What are Faz Tokens and what should I spend them on?
Faz Tokens are the currency, earned from battles, from chests in the overworld and from fishing at DeeDee's spot. They buy everything: bytes that assist you in battle, chips that permanently raise stats, and the endoskeleton armour upgrades that cost from 250 up to 9000 tokens. The standard priority is armour and cheap bytes first, with the expensive titanium endoskeleton saved for the late regions.
What are the Sub-Tunnels and how do I get into them?
They are secret areas reached through glitch portals hidden inside the normal regions, usually marked by a visual error in the environment. Inside you find enemies far stronger than the surrounding area, some of the best chips in the game, and lore about the Flipside. There is also a deeper layer beyond the third one, and going past that is described as a point of no return.
What are the overworld regions and what order do I visit them?
You begin in Fazbear Hills, then move into Choppy's Woods, Dusting Fields and Lilygear Lake, with Blacktomb Yard and Pinwheel Circus reached from those, and the Mysterious Mine and the Deep-Metal Mine branching off as cave systems. The Pinwheel Funhouse is a maze of tents that drops you in a random location. Update 2 added Halloween Backstage and the Geist Lair, and the Glitches area holds the toughest enemies and the best chips.
How do the characters get recruited?
In Adventure mode you find them as you explore and add them to your reserve, then bring them into an active party of four whenever you like. The game has over 40 playable characters drawn from across the series, including classic, toy, withered, phantom and nightmare variants, and the first area is where several of them turn up. In Fixed Party mode none of this applies, because your parties are chosen at the start and stay as they are.
How many endings does fnaf-world have and how do I get the real one?
There are seven or more depending on difficulty, party leader and how far into the code you travel. Beating the owl-shaped guardian on Normal ends the game and gives you the Security trophy, with the character mocking you for choosing the easiest difficulty. The true final ending requires beating Scott Cawthon as the final boss in Hard mode. The other endings come from choosing Fredbear as party leader, entering the fourth layer of the Flipside, collecting all the hidden clocks, and a few other conditions.
