Five Nights at Freddy's is a point-and-click survival horror game by Scott Cawthon, released in 2014. You play a night guard stuck in a cramped security office inside a pizza restaurant, and the only things between you and four possessed animatronics are a desk, two doors, two hall lights and a power supply already losing the fight. Nothing in that office can fight back. Every decision comes down to knowing where each animatronic is and whether it is worth spending electricity to act on that knowledge.

Night one only activates Bonnie and Chica at very low aggression, so the first shift works as a tutorial for the whole series. Freddy starts moving on night three, Foxy escalates sharply on night four, and by night five every AI level in the building is at its maximum. Finishing night five pays out 120 dollars, unlocks a sixth bonus night, and opens the Custom Night, where you set each animatronic's aggression from 0 to 20 yourself.

How to Play Five Nights at Freddy's

Everything happens from one fixed viewpoint. Push the pointer toward the left or right edge to pan across the office, click the red panel buttons to slam a door, click the smaller white buttons to light a hallway, and click the monitor tab at the bottom of the screen to pull up the camera map. The Usage bar on the left climbs as you spend, and the base drain never stops.

Game Controls

ControlAction
Move mouse left or rightPan the office view between the two doorways. The view snaps back to centre on its own, so you must hold the pointer at the edge.
Left mouse button on the left red panelToggle the left security door. This is a click target on the left wall of the office, and it is the only thing that stops Bonnie at the doorway.
Left mouse button on the right red panelToggle the right security door, the matching target on the right wall. Doors cost the most power per second of anything you can do.
Left mouse button on the left white panelToggle the left hallway light. Cheap, but it runs on its own timer and switching it off early wastes the cost already paid.
Left mouse button on the right white panelToggle the right hallway light, used to confirm whether Chica is standing outside before you commit to closing the door.
Left mouse button on the monitor tabPull the monitor up and down. Holding the tablet open keeps the animatronics frozen in place but drains power continuously.
Click a camera name on the mapSwitch camera feeds. Clicking between feeds quickly is the standard way to keep Freddy and Foxy locked in place.
Move pointer to the far left or right of the officeLook down either hallway without leaving the office. The two doorways cannot be seen at the same time, so checking both means turning fully between them.

How to Beat Five Nights at Freddy's

Treat the monitor as a freeze button, not a scouting tool

Every animatronic in the building stops moving while it is visible on a camera feed. That is a free action, and it is far more valuable than the information you get from looking. Freddy in particular can be held on the Show Stage or in the East Hall Corner indefinitely by leaving his camera up, which is the cleanest way to reach night five without draining the power supply. Feed-hopping also stalls Foxy, because his rate of leaving Pirate Cove depends on how often you are watching the cameras at all.

Spend power on doors, spend it never on lights

A closed door is the only thing that stops a doorway attack outright, and the light is only ever a confirmation tool. The correct order is always the same: flash the light, see who is there, decide whether it will reach you, then close the door and open it again the moment the scratching stops. Chica will stand outside a closed right door indefinitely without doing anything, so if you have already confirmed the hallway is empty you can leave the door shut for a long window at no extra risk beyond the power.

Never run the monitor open on night four or five

The drain from an open monitor compounds with everything else, and the higher AI levels mean the animatronics move fast enough that a long camera session costs you several percent of your remaining power. The habits that carry you through night three stop working here. Go to a camera, identify the route of whichever animatronic is closest, drop the monitor, and only look again when you have a reason to.

Read Freddy's laugh instead of watching him

Freddy is only ever visible as a pair of eyes in the dark, and on most cameras you cannot tell him apart from the background at all. His laugh is the reliable signal, because it plays every single time he advances a room, followed by the sound of running. Learn the difference between the laugh that means he moved and the theme he plays in the Kitchen, and you can track him through the cameras by ear while keeping your eyes on the doorways.

Important Items in Five Nights at Freddy's

ItemWhat it does
Security camera feedThe only way to see animatronics before they reach the office. An open monitor freezes them in place, which is also the only reliable method for stopping Freddy mid-route.
Left and right security doorsInstantly block an animatronic at the doorway. Holding a door shut drains power fast, and both doors together will kill the power supply well before 6 AM.
Hallway lightsThe cheapest way to confirm a visitor. Bonnie's shadow shows through the left window, Chica is clearly visible in the right window, and a lit hall tells you whether the doorway is worth sealing.
Usage and power barA live readout of your remaining power on the left of the screen, with a bar chart of what is consuming it. Every entry in that chart is a decision you made in the last few seconds.
Desk fan and desk lightIdle decoration that is also the source of the base power drain. They cannot be switched off, which is why your power falls even when you do nothing at all.
Freddy poster on CAM 2BA harmless poster until a rare face overlay appears on it. That overlay summons Golden Freddy into the office, and pulling the monitor back up is the only way to make him vanish.
Phone call from the previous guardAn audio-only narrative beat at the start of each night that explains what the animatronics do and warns which one is new. It carries no mechanical information you cannot learn by dying.
PaycheckThe 120 dollar reward for surviving night five, awarded on the results screen along with a star on the main menu and access to the bonus sixth night.

Five Nights at Freddy's Difficulty Modes

ModeBest for
Night 1Your first shift and a genuine tutorial. Only Bonnie and Chica are active, both at AI level 0, and neither can reach the office quickly enough to catch a beginner who keeps the monitor up.
Night 2Learning the camera map. Bonnie and Chica begin moving between rooms but the routes are still short, so you can afford to watch every feed without running out of power.
Night 3Meeting Freddy for the first time. He is now the only animatronic whose AI level does not rise with the hour, so you can learn his entire route on camera before he ever reaches your door.
Night 4 and Night 5The real test. Foxy's aggression jumps to 6 on night four and every other level climbs, and by night five all four animatronics run at their maximum settings simultaneously.
Night 6 and Night 7 Custom NightEndgame play. Night 6 is a free bonus shift with higher levels across the board, and Night 7 lets you set all four AI levels to 20, which is the hardest configuration in the game.

Tips and Strategies for Five Nights at Freddy's

Power out means a Freddy jingle, then a jumpscare

When the meter empties, both doors roll open and stay open, the lights die, and the office goes dark. Freddy then appears in the left hallway and performs his theme before the jumpscare lands. If you hit zero percent close to 6 AM, the night can still be survived, because the game keeps running until the clock reaches six. Do not assume a blackout is an automatic loss.

Watch Pirate Cove constantly, because Foxy punishes neglect

Foxy's rate of leaving Pirate Cove is tied to how little you check the camera. The stages escalate from a closed door, to a flickering silhouette, to scratching at the gap, and only the final stage is a full sprint down the west hall. When he does break through, he knocks loudly, drains power, and resets to a random spot inside Pirate Cove, and each successive knock costs more than the last.

Flick the camera map to hold animatronics in place

Bonnie and Chica both stand motionless in the doorway if you simply keep the monitor down, but the moment you raise it to check they are triggered into coming in. A quick tap on another camera and back stops them without closing a door at all, which saves a meaningful amount of power over a full night. This is the single most useful trick on nights one through three.

If you see Golden Freddy, raise the monitor immediately

The rare face overlay on the Freddy poster on camera 2B produces flashing images and the words IT'S ME, and Golden Freddy will already be standing in the office. He waits only a few seconds before the game closes. Pull the monitor back up and he disappears. The cleaner solution is to simply never check camera 2B, but that corner is also a normal Bonnie route, so most players have to know the counter.

Five Nights at Freddy's FAQ

How many nights do I have to survive in Five Nights at Freddy's?

Five nights is the full main story, running from 12 AM to 6 AM each night. Surviving night five awards you a paycheck, a star on the main menu, and unlocks a bonus sixth night. Completing night six then unlocks the seventh night, the Custom Night, where you set the AI level of each of the four animatronics yourself.

What exactly happens at 12 AM and at 6 AM?

12 AM is when the shift starts and the animatronics begin moving, which is why nothing happens during the first hour in a new night. At 6 AM the night ends, the power is no longer draining, and any animatronic still in motion freezes where it stands, which is the state the game is usually found in at the end of a run. Reaching 6 AM is the only way to complete a night.

What does each of the four animatronics do?

Bonnie starts on the Show Stage and works through Backstage, the Dining Area, the Supply Closet and the West Hall before appearing in the left doorway. Chica follows a mirrored path on the right side and appears in the right doorway. Freddy starts moving on night three, travels the central route through the Dining Area, the Bathroom and the Kitchen to the East Hall Corner on the right. Foxy sits inside Pirate Cove, escalates through four visible stages, then sprints down the West Hall and knocks on the left door.

How do I survive a night without running out of power?

Stop using lights as a habit and use them only to confirm a threat, keep the monitor down as the default state, and rely on the fact that an animatronic on camera cannot move. Closing doors is the most expensive action, so only seal a doorway once you have confirmed something is standing in it. Night one and night two can be passed almost entirely without a single door, because the AI levels are too low to threaten you.

What does closing a door actually do to my power?

Each closed door adds a fixed amount to your drain every second, and the light and the open monitor add their own smaller amounts on top of the constant base drain from the desk fan and desk light. The Usage panel on the left of the screen shows exactly which of these is active. Holding both doors shut for a full night will drain the supply well before 6 AM on any difficulty above night two.

Can I beat Golden Freddy, and what is it?

Golden Freddy cannot be avoided once he appears, but he can be dismissed. He is summoned by a rare face overlay on the Freddy poster visible on camera 2B. If you are in the office when he materialises and flashing images appear, raise the monitor again and he disappears. The only way to prevent the summoning entirely is to never view that camera.

Is there a harder mode than night five?

Yes, and there are three. Night 6 is a bonus shift with higher AI levels than night five that appears in the main menu once you beat night five. Night 7 is the Custom Night, unlocked after night six, where every animatronic has an adjustable level from 0 to 20. Setting all four to 20 is the standard maximum-difficulty challenge, and the phone does not ring on either of those nights.

What happens after the ending?

Finishing night five produces a results screen and a paycheck, which is the mechanical end of the story run. The office chair then rolls back out into the restaurant for a short camera sequence, followed by a final shot of the animatronics and a burned pizza poster. The game has no further story nights beyond the Custom Night, so the only progression left after that is improving your AI settings.
