Rody has worked twenty-eight service jobs in seven years, and he is on his twenty-ninth because he needs money to take Manon to dinner. The job is at a small French bistro run by Vincent, a chef who is charming, unnervingly attentive and lives directly above the restaurant. Rody has nightmares about becoming food. Vincent keeps explaining why the menu changes. Neither of those is the main problem, and by the end of the week you will know what is.

This is a short 2D restaurant tycoon game with visual novel and point-and-click elements, set in 1960s France. You run a week of shifts: serve customers correctly, manage what you carry, buy equipment, talk to your employer when the game lets you, and notice what he does while he thinks you are working. Four endings, one of which requires a chain of conversations you can miss on a first playthrough without any indication that you missed anything.

About Dead Plate

The restaurant is a real job before it is anything else. Orders come in, plates go out, money accumulates, and a customer who loses patience leaves you a dead plate and no tip. The tycoon layer is not a wrapper around a horror game — it is the reason you are standing in the kitchen at three in the morning instead of walking away, and that is exactly what the horror is built on.

Vincent is the reason the story exists. He is generous, capable and visibly interested in Rody, and none of that is reassuring. He explains things. He offers help. He also has no sense of taste, which he mentions casually and which Rody files away and does not think about hard enough. Every night-shift answer you give is partly about how much of that you have noticed.

The game hides its real subject in plain sight. Rody has nightmares, packs leftovers he never eats, and cannot reach the ex-girlfriend he is working all this to impress. The story never states plainly what is happening in the restaurant, and it is built so that a first playthrough reads it as atmosphere and a second playthrough reads it as a list of instructions the game already gave you.

How to Play Dead Plate

Serve customers correctly to earn money, buy equipment between shifts, and pick dialogue answers carefully when the game gives you the option. The week is short and fixed, so what you do on day three is the thing you will still be living with on day seven.

  1. Take the tutorial, or skip it — neither changes anything downstream. Skipping saves ten minutes and costs you nothing mechanically, so do it if you have already played restaurant management games.
  2. Serve accurately before you serve quickly. A customer served wrong leaves you a dead plate and no tip, and dead plates have to be dealt with, which costs you the one thing the week does not give back.
  3. Buy the equipment before the week starts, not during it. The shop catalogue is only available in your apartment between shifts, and several upgrades change how much of each shift you can survive rather than adding a small bonus.
  4. Do the night-shift sections properly. Two of the four endings require objects and access you can only pick up in the late-night phases, and there is no prompt telling you they exist.

How to Beat Dead Plate

There are four endings and they are not evenly distributed. One requires a chain of five separate conversations spread across days three, four and five, plus a search of a specific room on the night shift. The game never tells you the chain exists.

Take Ending One First and Let It Sit

Play the week straight through without trying to be clever and you will get Table for One. That ending is the baseline the other three are measured against, and it ends with Rody calling a number that does not answer. Knowing that is what gives the other endings their weight.

Work the Conversation Chain on Days Three to Five

The phone call requires five things across three days: the mandatory cutscene on day three, two specific answers to Vince on day four, one question about food on day five, and checking a particular bin in his office during the night shift. Miss any one and you are locked into Ending One with no indication you missed anything.

Buy the Matches and Keep Them Equipped

If you attend the dinner party you will need the freezer key from his nightstand, and for the only ending where Rody survives you also need matches bought from the catalogue before day seven and equipped in the menu. The item does nothing on its own and everything in one specific branch.

Learn the QTE, Because One Ending Is a Skill Check

The chase sequence splits two endings off the same starting position. Getting the presses right opens the route where Rody burns the restaurant down; missing them drops you into the ending you do not want. It is the only place in the game where mechanical execution decides the ending rather than a flag.

Important Items in Dead Plate

There is no combat inventory in Dead Plate. What you buy is equipment that changes how a shift goes, and what you find is access — keys, matches and the things other people left where they should not have.

ItemWhat it does
MatchesBought from the apartment catalogue and useless until equipped. Required to burn the ropes in the freezer and therefore required for the only ending where Rody survives.
The freezer keyTaken from Vince's nightstand during the dinner party. Two of the four endings cannot be reached without it, and nothing points you at it.
A broken bottleFound in the office during the chase. It is what Rody uses to stop Vincent, and using it is what turns the fire into an ending rather than a death.

Dead Plate Difficulty Modes

Dead Plate has no difficulty setting and no second phase. What changes between playthroughs is how much of what the week is telling you you are willing to act on, and how long you keep answering as though this is a job.

ModeBest for
First WeekSeeing the game as a restaurant game before it becomes anything else
Flag HunterFinding the conversation chain you missed without ever being told it existed
CompletionistPlayers who want the full picture rather than only the good ending

Tips and Strategies for Dead Plate

Read the Night Shifts, Not Just the Service

The most important content in the game happens in the late phases when there is no one left to serve. Rody and Vince both talk differently once the restaurant is empty, and the objects you need for the later endings are only reachable in those windows. Do not skip them for the sake of finishing the week.

Count the Answers, Not the Days

Ending requirements are scattered: one cutscene on day three, two answers on day four, one question on day five, one searchable bin on the night shift. There is no checklist in the game and no warning that any of them mattered. Take notes on what you pick or you will not be able to tell which reply closed the chain.

Spend Money on Upgrades, Not Appearance

The catalogue sells things that look equally like purchases. The ones that change how a shift survives are worth the money; the cosmetic ones are not, and a week you cannot finish is a week you cannot route. Tip jars and skates pay for themselves, cologne does not pay for anything.

Accept That Manon Cannot Be Saved

You will be tempted to read the week as a route toward getting her back. She is already gone before the game starts, and no ending returns her. The only thing your choices change is whether Rody finds out what happened — which is a different outcome, and the one the game is actually about.

Dead Plate FAQ

Is Dead Plate a horror game?

It is a 2D restaurant tycoon game with visual novel and point-and-click elements, set in 1960s France, where the horror is written into an otherwise ordinary service job. It ships with 70+ CGs, 8 maps and 8,000+ lines of dialogue.

How long does Dead Plate take?

About 1 hour 20 to 30 minutes to reach one ending, and up to around three hours for a full completion. It is a short game by design — the whole story is one week of shifts.

How many endings does Dead Plate have?

Four, plus additional dialogue and hidden details on the late shifts. One of them requires a chain of five separate actions across days three to five that the game never tells you exists.

Can I save Manon?

No. She is already dead before the game begins, and no ending changes that. Your choices determine whether Rody finds out what happened to her, not whether she survives.

Do I need the matches?

Only for the ending where Rody survives. They are bought from the catalogue in his apartment, they do nothing at all unless equipped in the menu, and you must have them equipped before day seven. If you did not buy them, your ending options are limited.

Why am I not getting the good ending?

The later endings need a phone call on the night of day six, and the call requires five prerequisites: the day-three cutscene, two specific answers to Vince on day four, the question about his favourite food on day five, and searching the bin in his office on the night shift. Miss any one and the game sends you to Ending One without telling you.

Is there a chase or a jump scare?

There is one chase sequence, and it is a real skill check rather than a scripted cutscene — you press the prompted key at the right time. That sequence is the only place in the game where mechanical execution, rather than a dialogue flag, decides which ending you get.

Is Dead Plate suitable for younger players?

It is rated for mature players. Content includes blood, meat-processing imagery, body horror, captivity, strangulation and repeated deaths across the endings, though it presents them through a horror-game lens rather than graphically.
