Granny 3 moves the family out of the house and into a walled mansion with a dry moat around it, and for the first time in the series you are allowed outside. The garden, the shed, the guardhouse and the rail line are all real spaces you can be caught in, which changes the whole rhythm of a run. Three hunters now: Granny with the bat, Grandpa with a double barrel shotgun, and Slendrina, who simply appears and looks at you until you die.

Where the previous games were about unlocking one door, this one is about assembling machinery in two separate chains and picking which one you finish. You have five days, a house and yard full of item containers, and a lot of small mechanical steps between you and the gate or the train. The mansion also has a moat with an alligator in it, so the shortest route between two points is regularly the worst one.

How to Play Granny 3

The verbs are the same as ever: move, crouch, run, hide, open, carry. What is new is the number of things that can end a run. Granny walks toward noise, Grandpa lines you up with a shotgun at range, and Slendrina ignores walls and noise. Retreating in a straight line is usually wrong, because breaking line of sight and putting an object between you and your pursuer still works on all three.

Game Controls

ControlAction
W A S DWalk. Crouch-walking is the quiet default and the only safe pace on the wooden floors upstairs.
MouseLook around. Click the frame once to capture the pointer, then it stays locked.
E or Left clickInteract: open doors and drawers, pick items up, load and fire the weapon you are holding.
CToggle crouch. Half speed and almost no noise, which is what keeps Granny off your trail.
ShiftRun. Fast, loud, and it burns the stamina you need if Slendrina shows up later.
SpaceDrop or throw the held item, which is the cheapest way to move a hunter out of your way.
FBreak a bear trap you are caught in, use the screwdriver faster, or interact with machinery.
RHide under a bed or a couch, or inside a wardrobe. Press again to come out.

How to Beat Granny 3

Learn the whole property, not just the house

This is the first Granny game where the garden is a real map. Walk the yard, find the shed, the guardhouse, the well, the doghouse and the railway in a Practice run and note where each one connects to the house. The gate escape route runs through the yard and the train route runs past the mansion entirely, so both of them will be walked by a hunter at some point. Knowing which fence to climb and which corner is blind is worth more than any single item.

Choose the gate or the train on day one

The gate escape is the shorter chain: unlock the shed, fix the generator with the bridge crank, drop the drawbridge, fit the fuse into the control panel, and open the gate. The train escape is longer and needs a ticket or a coin, plus an accelerator, a train key and a completed electric box. Because item spawns are randomised, deciding early means every key you pick up is one you needed, instead of collecting half of each.

Treat Slendrina as a movement problem, not a fight

She spawns at random, always in front of you, and forces your view toward her. The only counter is speed of reaction: turn a hundred and eighty degrees immediately, count to three, then turn back. Her stare timer is seven seconds on Practice, six on Easy, four on Normal, three on Hard and one on Extreme, so the window tightens exactly as the rest of the game gets faster. Looking away the instant she appears also avoids the screen shake that slows you down.

Use the teddy bear as a resource, not a curiosity

The teddy is the most misread item in the game. Picking it up summons Slendrina behind you instantly, and Grandpa's eyes go red, so it is not free. But carrying it into the third floor nursery and dropping it into the crib calms her for the rest of the run and she hands you an item when she appears. It is also the requirement for her good ending, so a run where you are already struggling is often better off ignoring it entirely.

Important Items in Granny 3

ItemWhat it does
Safe keyOpens the safe on the lower basement level. One of the two keys Slendrina can drop for you.
Padlock keyOpens the main gate padlock. This is the other of Slendrina's two possible item drops.
Play house keyUnlocks the doghouse-style playhouse in the back garden, which hides stun weapons and a route.
Weapon keyOpens Granny's weapon cabinet. Without it the cabinet stays sealed and the best stun tools stay locked.
Hammer, pliers and planksThe hammer strips boards off the gate and the third floor, the pliers cut the gate mechanism and the electric box wiring, and planks build the bridge over the gap.
Well handleFits on the well crank so you can raise the bucket and recover an item from inside it.
Teddy bearCarries you in the nursery in the third floor, which stops Slendrina bothering you for the rest of the run and can unlock her special ending. Picking it up also makes her appear immediately behind you.
WatermelonPlaced on the guillotine, it splits open and gives up one random hidden item. The seed item is random each time, so it is a gamble rather than a guarantee.

Granny 3 Difficulty Modes

ModeBest for
PracticeYour first run. Neither of the grandparents is home, so you can walk the mansion, the yard and the train line without pressure.
EasyLearning the property. They move slowly, floors do not creak, and Slendrina gives you six seconds of eye contact before she takes you.
NormalThe intended experience. Regular patrol speed and four seconds of eye contact, which is enough time to turn around if you react immediately.
HardConfident players. Both of them move faster than you and Slendrina's window drops to three seconds, so you need a muscle memory turn.
ExtremeEndgame only. You outrun neither of them and Slendrina kills after a single second of eye contact. She can be toggled off here if you want to isolate the grandparents.

Tips and Strategies for Granny 3

Grandpa's shotgun changes how you cross open ground

He shoots from range and only resorts to swinging when he is close, so open corridors and the yard are where you get hit. Break the sightline before you step into anything exposed, and prefer moving along walls and behind structures. If you can steal the shotgun off him while he sleeps in the first bedroom, you remove the ranged threat for that run and gain a weapon that hits both of them.

Stun with a purpose, then leave the room

The shotgun makes Granny disappear for two minutes on Easy, one on Normal and thirty seconds on Hard, while the crossbow dart freezes her for about two minutes on any setting. Those are long windows, but they do not stack well because you are still carrying a single item. Fire to buy access to a specific room, complete that one objective, then leave before she wakes up, rather than firing and standing there.

Never walk into the moat and never trust the elevator

Two hard rules that are not explained anywhere in the game. The moat is not a shortcut, it is an alligator, and falling or jumping in ends the run. The elevator on the upper floors drops you far enough to injure you badly, which costs you a whole day of progress. Use the stairs and the planks for the gap, and treat both the moat and the elevator as walls rather than routes.

Use the cameras and the moat as deliberate distractions

When a camera's red light turns green, Grandpa is watching that room and will walk straight to it. Walk past one in the far corridor and let it spot you, then clear the ground floor while he crosses the property. Combined with throwing an object into the opposite wing, this is the only way to reliably search the mansion in a short window without losing a day.

Granny 3 FAQ

How many days do I have to escape in Granny 3?

Five in-game days, and every time one of the three hunters catches you the day ends and you wake up in the starting room with the mansion reset while items you already placed stay where you dropped them. There is no time limit within a day, so careful searching is fine. Lose your fifth day and the run is over.

What does Slendrina do and how do I survive her?

She appears at random in front of you, always facing you, and kills you by eye contact rather than by touching you. The stare timer depends on difficulty: seven seconds on Practice, six on Easy, four on Normal, three on Hard and one on Extreme. Turn around immediately when she appears, count to three, then look back. She can also be switched off on any difficulty, including Practice and Extreme.

What is the difference between the gate escape and the train escape?

The gate route needs you to unlock the shed, fix the generator with the bridge crank, lower the drawbridge, put the fuse in the control panel and open the gate. The train route needs a ticket obtained with a coin or by dealing with the robot, then an accelerator, a train key and a completed electric box before you close the train doors. The gate is the shorter chain, the train is the longer one with a calmer final sequence.

What does the teddy bear actually do?

It does three separate things. Picking it up makes Slendrina appear behind you instantly and turns Grandpa's eyes red. Dropping it into the crib in the third floor nursery calms Slendrina for the rest of the run and she gives you an item when she shows up. And completing her good ending requires the teddy, so on a clean first run it is usually better to leave it alone.

Is there a harder mode than Extreme?

Extreme is the top of the difficulty list, and it is the only mode where both grandparents move faster than you and Slendrina kills after a single second. What makes it different in practice is the option: Extreme is the first Granny mode where you can toggle Slendrina off, which lets you take on only the two grandparents at their fastest.

What do the keys open?

The safe key opens the safe in the lower basement, the padlock key opens the main gate padlock, the play house key opens the playhouse in the back garden, the weapon key opens Granny's weapon cabinet and the car key opens the trunk in the basement car. Slendrina herself drops either the safe key or the padlock key when you complete the teddy ritual, so the teddy route can carry part of the gate escape for you.

What is the watermelon and the guillotine for?

The watermelon is a gamble item. Put it on the guillotine and it splits, giving up one hidden object drawn from a random pool, and the pool contents change between runs. Because it only ever yields one item and you cannot choose which, it is worth using when a specific key has spawned somewhere you are not willing to search yet.

How do I stop Grandpa from shooting me across the yard?

You cannot disarm him, but you can remove the threat for the run by taking his double barrel shotgun while he sleeps in the first bedroom. He keeps it back if he is knocked out, so it returns on the next day. If you would rather not fight him, simply avoid long straight sightlines and keep moving between cover, because he has to stop and aim before he fires.
