Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is a point-and-click survival horror game by Scott Cawthon, released in 2014, and it removes the doors that made the first game readable. There is no way to physically block an entrance, so the only defence is deception. A Freddy Fazbear mask sits on the desk, and while you are wearing it the animatronics read you as one of their own and lose interest. Everything else in the office is a resource that runs down while you use it.
The cast is split into two groups that behave completely differently. The withered originals come out of Parts and Service and travel the corridors, and the new toys come through the air vents, which the mask handles but nothing else can stop. A third threat, the Marionette, is not an animatronic you fight at all: it sits in the Prize Corner music box and stays contained only while you keep winding it.
How to Play Five Nights at Freddy's 2
The office view is fixed in the centre with the main hall ahead of you and a vent button on each side. Clicking the red mask button puts the Freddy head on, which blanks the screen edges and blocks your access to the camera, lights and music box. The flashlight is fired by clicking the screen while a camera feed is up. The music box is wound from one specific camera, and letting it run out is permanent for the night.
Game Controls
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| Move mouse left or right | Pan the office view between the two vent areas and the main hall. The view holds while the pointer rests at the edge of the frame. |
| Click the red mask button | Put on and remove the Freddy Fazbear mask. While worn, most animatronics lose track of you, but you cannot see the edges of the room or use any other control. |
| Click the white monitor button | Raise and lower the monitor. The tablet covers the office view entirely while it is up, so you are blind to anything standing in front of you. |
| Click the left vent light button | Light the left air vent to check whether something is inside it. The vent cannot be sealed, so this is your only way to gather information about it. |
| Click the right vent light button | Light the right air vent, which is the primary early warning for Toy Bonnie and the other vent travellers. |
| Click the main hall light button | Flash the main hall corridor. This is how you spot Withered Foxy, who is immune to the mask and must be repelled with light. |
| Click the camera screen to toggle the flashlight | Fire the flashlight while the monitor is up. A light button also appears in the corner of some feeds, including the hall cameras. |
| Click a camera name on the map | Switch camera feeds. The Prize Corner feed on camera 11 is the one you return to on a timer, because that is where the music box is. |
| Click the mask button again | Take the Freddy head off once an attack has passed. Leaving it on too long leaves you blind and deaf to the rest of the office, and taking it off mid-attack is fatal. |
How to Beat Five Nights at Freddy's 2
Learn the mask timing before you touch the music box
Almost every early death in this game comes from wearing the mask at the wrong moment. Put it on as an animatronic is still visible in the office and it will simply reach you anyway, because the disguise only works on something that has already committed to entering. The safe pattern is to raise the monitor, confirm which animatronic is closest, drop the monitor, put the mask on, hold it through the attack, then remove it and check the vents again.
Treat the music box as a fixed appointment, not a health bar
The Marionette is the only threat that punishes you for ignoring something rather than for being present when it attacks. The box drains from early in the night, it is watched on camera 11 in the Prize Corner, and once it empties the Marionette leaves and cannot be put back. Build the run around a repeating cycle instead: raise the monitor, wind the box, check two or three other feeds, drop the monitor and handle whatever was waiting.
Keep the flashlight ready for Withered Foxy specifically
Foxy is the one animatronic the mask does not fool, which makes him the most dangerous early mistake, because players instinctively reach for the mask when they see him in the hall. He is also the only threat that punishes you for leaving Balloon Boy unchecked, since a disabled flashlight means you cannot repel him at all. The correct answer is several flashes in a row while he is in the hallway, followed by raising and lowering the monitor to confirm he has actually retreated, which is far more expensive in time and power than a single burst.
Stop watching the vents continuously and use the light instead
Continuously monitoring both vents costs you power and tells you nothing you did not already know, because the vent occupants cannot be stopped by anything mechanical once they commit. A short light check on each side is cheaper and gives the same information. Save the monitor for the cameras that matter, which are the Prize Corner, the main hall, and whichever feed the closest animatronic is using to approach.
Important Items in Five Nights at Freddy's 2
| Item | What it does |
|---|---|
| Freddy Fazbear mask | The core defensive tool. Worn on the desk, it makes the office read you as an animatronic, which causes Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica, the withered trio and the Marionette to lose interest and move on. It does nothing against Withered Foxy. |
| Prize Corner music box | The Marionette's prison and the only item you must actively maintain. It sits in the Prize Corner on camera 11 and drains continuously, so you have to keep raising the monitor to wind it back up. |
| Handheld flashlight | The only thing that stops Withered Foxy, who ignores the mask entirely. He has to be hit with several flashes in a row while he stands in the office hallway, and then the monitor has to be raised and lowered to confirm he has gone back to the Parts and Service room. |
| Left and right air vents | Two entrances the office cannot physically bar or seal. They are how Toy Bonnie, Toy Chica, Mangle, the withered animatronics and Balloon Boy all enter, which is why the mask matters more than any barrier. |
| Main hall light | A wide corridor view used to detect Withered Foxy approaching and to confirm an empty hallway before you commit to a mask cycle. |
| Power meter and usage bar | Your score in this game. Masks, cameras and lights all draw from the same supply, and running it to zero ends the night exactly as it does in the first game. |
| Desk action figures and plushies | Collectible unlocks earned by surviving the Custom Night on each difficulty. They appear on your office desk and are purely cosmetic, with no effect on the night itself. |
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 Difficulty Modes
| Mode | Best for |
|---|---|
| Night 1 | Learning the mask cycle. Only Toy Chica is likely to appear, the music box only starts draining around 2 AM, and almost nothing can reach you if you keep the monitor up. |
| Night 2 | Meeting the vent group properly. Balloon Boy becomes active from this night, Withered Foxy starts leaving the Parts and Service room, the music box needs regular winding, and the first withered animatronics begin moving. |
| Night 3 | The difficulty spike. Most of the cast is now active at once, Toy Chica becomes relentless, and Withered Freddy, Bonnie and Chica all start moving through the building. |
| Night 4 and Night 5 | Full escalation, with every animatronic in the building active at once and the highest AI levels of the standard campaign. Golden Freddy does not appear until night six, so these two nights are the peak of the ordinary route. |
| Night 6 and Custom Night | The two hardest configurations. Night six is a bonus shift with the highest levels in the game and adds Golden Freddy as an active threat, and Night 7 lets you set all eleven AI levels from 0 to 20 with presets including 20/20/20/20/20. |
Tips and Strategies for Five Nights at Freddy's 2
Balloon Boy never kills you, but he takes your tools away
If he gets into the office he disables the flashlight and both vent lights, plays a looping laugh, and stays for the rest of the night. You will still be able to wear the mask, but with the flashlight gone, Withered Foxy becomes completely unanswerable. To stop him, put the mask on while he is still in the left vent and wait for the sound cue that he has left.
Toy Chica is the one who punishes you for checking the monitor
If she reaches the blind spot inside your office and you raise the monitor instead of putting the mask on, she jumps straight through the screen. This is the single most common way to lose a night two or three run. Her breathing is audible from the left vent, so the fix is to listen rather than to look, and treat any sound from that side as a reason to mask immediately.
Mangle hangs from the ceiling and cannot be blocked
Once Mangle is inside the office it waits overhead and then drops onto you, and nothing mechanical stops it. The mask is the answer here as well, and because Mangle moves through the vent system it is one of the later characters to appear. Keeping the office ceiling in mind is useful because it means the threat can be present even when both vent lights show nothing.
Power out is survivable if 6 AM is close
When the meter hits zero the office goes dark, the animatronics stop being held back by the lights, and the music box stops mattering because nothing is holding them. The night still ends at 6 AM if the clock gets there, so a blackout at 5 AM is a real situation rather than an instant loss. Spend power early to buy a safe position rather than hoarding it against a threat that arrives at 5 AM anyway.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 FAQ
How does the Freddy mask actually work?
The mask makes the office register you as an animatronic, so most of the cast loses interest and leaves. While it is worn the screen is blacked out at the edges and every other control is disabled, so you cannot check cameras, use lights, or wind the music box. It is not universal: Withered Foxy is not fooled by it, and it does nothing about the vents while you are off the mask.
What happens if the music box runs out?
The Marionette wakes up and leaves the Prize Corner, and once it is out it cannot be put back into the box for the remainder of the night. From that point every minute you survive is a result of masking it or of getting to 6 AM. The box is on camera 11, so winding it means raising the monitor and clicking that feed, which is why the box and the monitor are permanently linked.
What does each animatronic do in this game?
Toy Bonnie and Toy Chica travel through the air vents into the office blind spot, and the mask removes both. Mangle comes along the vents and waits overhead before dropping. Balloon Boy enters through the left vent and disables your lights rather than killing you. The withered Bonnie and Chica move through the corridors and vents, and Withered Freddy walks the main hall. Withered Foxy is immune to the mask, can only be driven off by the flashlight, and is active from night two onward. The Marionette is kept in the music box.
Are there any doors in Five Nights at Freddy's 2?
No, and that is the central change from the first game. The office has no left or right doors at all, and the air vents that replace them cannot be sealed either. There is nothing you can barricade, which is exactly why the Freddy mask and the flashlight are the whole of your defence.
How do I beat Withered Foxy?
With the flashlight, not the mask. He is deliberately built to ignore the Freddy disguise, so when you see him in the main hall you need to fire the light at him repeatedly, which stuns him and sends him back to the Parts and Service room. You must then raise and lower the monitor to confirm the hallway is empty, and on the later nights it is worth flashing him as many times as you can afford to be certain he has gone.
How many nights are there and what is on the last one?
Five story nights, each running from 12 AM to 6 AM, followed by a bonus sixth night and then the Custom Night. Night six is the shift where Golden Freddy becomes an active threat. The Custom Night is unlocked after that and lets you set all eleven animatronics from 0 to 20, with preset configurations, the hardest of which is 20/20/20/20/20. Surviving it unlocks desk collectibles, one per difficulty beaten.
What is Golden Freddy doing on night six?
On night six Golden Freddy becomes an active threat and appears in one of two forms. In the first he is a limp animatronic inside the office and you deal with him the same way as any other, by wearing the mask. In the second he is a ghostly apparition of his disembodied head filling the hallway, and he is only visible while your flashlight is on, so seeing him means you have to stop using the flashlight immediately.
Is there a harder mode than the fifth night?
Yes, and there are two more shifts after the fifth night. Night 6 is a bonus shift with the highest AI levels in the standard game, and it is also where Golden Freddy becomes an active threat. The Custom Night comes after that, and it replaces the fixed escalation with values you set yourself, from a near-harmless 0 up to 20 for every character at once. Presets are provided for players who do not want to build their own configuration.
