Horror Nun takes place in Eagle Junior High School, a former religious summer camp that has since fallen into permanent collapse. You arrive expecting a few weeks of games and friendship, and within a few minutes you are locked inside with Sister Madeline, a possessed nun who carries a hammer and treats every corridor as her classroom. She is not a wandering monster. She is a pursuer who listens: running, dropping something, or opening a drawer at the wrong moment is enough to draw her to where you are standing, and once she enters a room she will check the places you have already searched.

What makes Horror Nun different from a standard chase game is the one-item rule. You can carry a single object at a time, so the school is really a storage problem — every key, tool and code you find has to be put somewhere specific, and where you put it is what you will be thinking about later. The difference between a clean escape and a wasted run is usually whether you carried the right thing for the route you were building, or whether you left it in a corridor you no longer want to cross. Three escape routes mean you can commit early, and committing early is what makes the building finishable rather than a loop.

About Horror Nun

The setting does more work than a name. Eagle Junior High is a summer camp that was sold to parents as a place where children would be looked after, and the game never lets you forget that the promise was a lie. The corridors are arranged for children — low sightlines, lockers you can hide inside, vents a person can crawl through — which is exactly why a nun with a hammer is so effective in them. Every space that would keep a child safe is a space that will not keep you safe.

Sister Madeline is the reason the building has rules. She is not a monster wandering a maze; she is staff who still believes she is supervising. That is why she patrols rather than hunts, why she investigates sounds instead of tracking you directly, and why breaking line of sight actually works. A predator that can only be evaded by outrunning you would turn every corridor into a coin flip. One that stops to investigate gives you something to plan around.

The children still trapped inside are the story the building keeps telling. Their traces are scattered through the rooms, and reading them is how the school explains itself. They are also the reason the game never resolves into a simple chase: the place is occupied, not abandoned, and the rules you are learning are somebody else’s rules.

How to Play Horror Nun

Search the school for keys, tools and codes, and solve the environmental puzzles that open a way out. Keep noise down, remember where you left things, and stay out of Sister Madeline’s line of sight. You can carry one item at a time, so plan the trip before you take it.

  1. Sweep one floor before moving up. Each wing has a predictable cluster of pickups, and clearing a floor properly means you can cross it later without stopping to search. Note lockers, vents, dead ends and connecting halls as you go — those four things are the difference between hiding and being cornered.
  2. Decide where an item lives before you pick it up. With a one-item limit, a key you dropped in a dark classroom is a key you will have to walk back into. Central rooms with several exits make good caches, as long as Sister Madeline does not patrol them too often. Leaving tools in memorable places beats scattering them wherever you happen to stop.
  3. Treat sound as the resource it is. Walking is quiet, crouching is quieter, running is a beacon. Opening drawers, doors and containers all make noise, so open them when she is far away rather than when she is one corridor over. If you need to move fast, do it across ground you have already cleared.

How to Beat Horror Nun

Horror Nun is finished by getting out, not by surviving a timer. Sister Madeline can be evaded indefinitely; what you cannot do is finish without an escape route prepared, and every route needs objects you have to fetch one at a time.

Learn the Layout Before You Take Anything

The first run through a wing should be about the building, not the objective. Mark the hiding places you can actually reach while crouched, and note which corridors she crosses. Most of the deaths people blame on her patrol are really deaths caused by picking up a second key in a room they had not cleared.

Cache Items at Junctions

A room with three or more doors is worth more than the room you are standing in. Bring the item back to a junction rather than carrying it to wherever it is needed next, because the trip back is where you will be exposed. Once a route is solved, leave the tool in the room where the puzzle is — you will not need to carry it again.

Break Sight, Then Break Distance

Running in a straight line does not work against a character who investigates. Turn a corner, put a wall or a locker between you, and let her commit to the search. The moment she is searching the wrong room you have bought yourself the time to move — using it is the whole skill.

Commit to One Route

Each escape route wants its own set of objects, and collecting for three at once is what turns a run into a slog. Decide which exit you are building, fetch only what that route needs, and treat the other doors as scenery until you have a way out in hand.

Important Items in Horror Nun

The items fall into three groups: keys that open specific doors, mechanical tools that complete environmental tasks, and codes or clues that unlock areas no key will. With a one-item carry limit, which group something belongs to matters as much as what it does.

ItemWhat it does
KeysOpen one specific door or container. Carrying the wrong one costs you the walk back to where it belongs.
ToolsComplete mechanical tasks — pry bars, fuses, cutters. The tool has to be in your hand when you reach the job, so plan the route backwards from the door.
Codes and cluesOpen areas that no key will. Found on paper, walls and objects in other rooms, which is why a clue picked up early can matter an hour later.
The single carry slotNot an item but the rule that governs them. Everything you find has a place you chose, and that choice is what you will be trying to remember while being chased.

Horror Nun Difficulty Modes

Horror Nun is built around pressure rather than a difficulty slider, but how much of that pressure you take on changes the run. What you are managing is attention: how often she is near, how much noise you have made, and how far you are from prepared ground.

ModeBest for
ExplorationPlayers who want the school mapped before anything is attempted
StandardMost runs, and the clearest way to learn the hiding layout
SilentRuns where being seen once ends the attempt

Tips and Strategies for Horror Nun

The One-Item Rule Is the Whole Game

Players try to solve Horror Nun by memorising where items are. That is necessary and not sufficient — the real skill is deciding where each item should live so the walk back never crosses her. Route from the cache to the door, not from the door to the cache.

Noise Has a Radius, Not a State

Sprinting is not "loud" and walking is not "quiet" — both are relative to how close she is. A sprint two floors away may be free; a drawer opened one room over is not. The same action has a completely different cost depending on where she is when you do it.

Lose Her, Then Wait

Breaking line of sight only helps if you use the time. Get to a junction you know, hold still until she commits to the search elsewhere, and only then resume. Players who keep moving after turning a corner are the ones who get caught in the next room.

Do Not Open Things in Front of Her

Searching is the game, and searching makes noise. Check that the room is empty and that she is not on her way back before you start opening drawers. The items do not go anywhere — the noise you made does.

Horror Nun FAQ

How many items can you carry in Horror Nun?

One at a time. That is the central constraint of the game: you pick something up, it occupies your hands, and you have to put it down before you can take anything else. Where you leave it is one of the most important decisions you make.

How do I escape Sister Madeline in Horror Nun?

She investigates sound rather than tracking you directly, so breaking line of sight works. Turn a corner or a room, get a wall, a locker or a vent between you, and let her commit to searching the wrong place. Then use the time she spends searching to move. Running in a straight line does not work against her.

What are the best hiding spots in Horror Nun?

Lockers, crawl vents and the spaces under furniture are the reliable ones, because they break her line of sight rather than just slowing you down. Learn a handful on each floor early — the value of a hiding spot comes entirely from knowing it is there before you need it.

Are there different escape routes in Horror Nun?

There are three, and they need different objects to open. Because you can only carry one item at a time, trying to supply all three at once is the most common way to stall. Pick the exit you want, collect only what that route needs, and come back for the others later.

Is there crafting in Horror Nun?

No. Horror Nun has no crafting system — what you collect are keys, tools and codes that open the school directly. If you are looking for recipes and material combinations, that is a different game in the same series rather than this one.

How do I stay quiet while searching?

Search when she is far away rather than close, crouch when you need to move quietly, and keep sprinting for emergencies or for ground you have already cleared. Opening drawers, doors and containers all make noise on their own, so the timing matters more than the action.

How do I get past a locked door in Horror Nun?

Most locks want a specific key or a mechanical tool, and both have to be in your hands at the door — which with a one-item limit means fetching them one at a time. Some areas need codes and clues instead, and those are usually found in a different room, so a door you cannot open yet is often a marker for where to look next.

How long does it take to beat Horror Nun?

A full escape takes well over an hour for a first run, and longer if you keep getting caught. Most of that time goes into searching and moving objects rather than the escapes themselves, and because the building is randomised the route you learn is not always the route you get next time.
